Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge

I haven’t played a frog game since Chrono Trigger

Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge was released in June 2024 on Steam, Xbox Series, and Switch. The publisher is Armor Games Studios, a well-known American game company that also developed titles like The Last Stand: Aftermath.”

This game is a frog-themed farm simulation where you buy furniture to attract frogs, feed them insects, collect them, and even name them. If you love frogs, this game is a must-play. I haven’t played a game featuring frogs since Chrono Trigger on the Super Famicom. I’m excited because this game seems to prove that frogs are the best.

The frog designs are cute

The story begins with Cleo taking a long vacation and heading to the wetlands. Now, let’s catch those frogs!

The frog designs are adorable. I had thought they might lean towards a more realistic appearance, but these are so cute that even those who aren’t fond of frogs would want to complete them.

Gathering frogs also requires money

To catch frogs, you need insects that are locally sourced and practically free. However, setting up the marshland environment for obtaining these insects for free requires investment in environmental preparation.

As you improve the environment, you’ll be able to catch insects in the insect icon speech bubble. Insects also have different rarities, and as you develop the marshland environment, you’ll have a better chance of finding rare insects. That’s interesting!

The source of income is products made from materials gathered in the marshland. There are also mini-games where success increases the harvest, keeping players engaged. With various other mini-games available, try them out yourself to see!

One thing that caught my attention is that as you develop the marshland, naturally, the production of materials increases. However, currently, the maximum storage limit is only 150 units, which you’ll notice while playing—it fills up quickly. I wish there was a bit more storage capacity available.

The variety of frogs far exceeded my imagination

I was foolish to think I would gather them all by the end of today. The encyclopedia isn’t filling up as quickly as I had hoped.

No, not just that, there are even unknown frogs out there. How many are there, really? Looks like I need to settle in and play seriously. Just collecting them won’t be enough since I’ll run out of bait, so some clever planning seems necessary.

Farm simulation and frog collecting are a perfect match!

This game has more volume than I imagined. While there’s enjoyment in collecting frogs, you can also simply have fun designing farm layouts. For those who want to focus on earning money, there’s freedom to design production facilities to maximize profits.

When it comes to collecting frogs, sometimes the timing of their appearance overlaps. However, once you’ve obtained one, it’s marked as acquired, so there’s no risk of accidentally wasting bait. Therefore, it encourages players with a “next time for sure” mentality.

I’m also going to challenge myself to complete the remaining frogs from now on. How about everyone else tries collecting frogs during this rainy season? Well then, see you later!
