About Jobs

The Laboratory of Dungeon Antiqua 2

I apologize if some parts feel unnatural, as I am translating from Japanese.

This is an overview of the jobs in Dungeon Antiqua 2. These are my personal impressions, so they are subjective. If you notice something particularly great about a specific job, feel free to share it!

Which job do you like the most?

Fighter

A basic front-line job that can equip up to Heavy Gear. This is the one everyone usually picks first.

“Inner Steel” is very handy, as it cures all status ailments at the end of each turn. It stays useful all the way through the late game.

Thief

Early in the game, this job is not very appealing because the party’s combat power is low. However, it can quickly detect treasures and disarm traps, so you might be able to find strong equipment right from the start.

With “Loot Sense,” previously hidden treasure chests become visible. If you use it from the beginning, you won’t miss any chests. Some are literally hidden in walls, so if you don’t want to leave anything behind, it’s worth having one party member with this skill.

Monk

This is a newly added job in this game. It embodies high damage with very low defense, and male characters will appear bald. Bald martial artists are usually strong.

The weapon is bare hands, and if both hands are empty, you can perform a Double Punch. “Retaliate” is also quite handy—though it works only probabilistically.

The main drawback is that, despite being a front-line job, it has paper-thin armor. Early to mid-game, you won’t have much in the way of defensive equipment, so be careful not to get knocked out.

Mage

An expert specializing in offensive magic. Like the Monk, this job has paper-thin armor, but since it can fight from the back row, it’s less likely to get into trouble.

It serves as a buff/debuff support for bosses, using skills like ARMOR BREAK to lower enemy defense, or HASTE to boost allies’ accuracy and damage. It also has powerful staff-based attacks, which is a big plus. Early in the game, it’s a good idea to level this job alongside the Priest.

Priest

An expert specializing in healing magic. Female characters appear as cute sisters. Its defense is decent, and if you position them in the back row, they’re unlikely to get knocked out.

The “Pray” skill, which restores MP, is very powerful. With this skill, you can cast healing spells without worrying about running out of MP. Having one party member dedicated to Pray → automatic recovery after battles is extremely convenient.

Archer

The following jobs are unlocked by progressing in the Tower of Trials.

A backline class that joined in this installment and freely wields a bow. It has the fastest growth rate of all classes.

This job has “Aim,” which ensures hits, and “Double Shot,” which attacks twice. It’s quite useful through the mid-game, but later on its lack of raw damage becomes noticeable. That said, it grows quickly, so if you have a strong bow, it might be worth including in your party.

Bishop

An all-rounder job that can use both offensive and healing magic. If fully leveled, it even learns a skill that halves MP consumption.

Personally, I find the Bishop in this game very difficult to use. The battle commands come with the default skill “Identify,” which prevents equipping “Pray,” the skill that synergizes best with magic. This is a major drawback.

Additionally, its growth is the slowest of all jobs, and it cannot use Spell M5 or P5, making it a jack-of-all-trades but master-of-none. I don’t recommend it, but if anyone manages to make it work well, please let me know.

Samurai

A job that can wield dual swords. What do people in English-speaking countries think of Japanese samurai?

The Samurai is a swordsman who sacrifices the shield to unleash massive damage. You can switch weapons to match a boss’s race and take advantage of Race Effects, which is a strong point. However, since you need two weapons, it can get quite expensive.

Paladin

This job can equip Holy Gear, so aim for it if you want to wield Excalibur.

The skill “Cover,” which shields a critically injured ally, is very useful. This is a very sturdy job, so it won’t go down easily. It’s also strong against demons that specialize in instant-death attacks, making it reliable all the way through the late game.

Ninja

A job that throws shurikens from a distance to hunt its prey—classic Ninja.

Continuing from the previous game, the skill “Lethal,” which can defeat enemies probabilistically, is very strong. “Battlemind” can increase the chance of a Power Hit, and when combined with Samurai or Monk, it can deliver massive damage. Because of this, the Ninja’s presence feels a bit less prominent.

By the way, shurikens are endgame equipment in this installment, so until then you’ll have to make do with a bow. Also, “Double Shot” doesn’t work with shurikens, which is a bit disappointing.

Recommended Jobs

My personal recommendation: for clearing the main story, a stable party is two Paladins, a Priest, and a Mage. It’s best if both magic users can use “Pray.”

For post-game dungeons, switch to a damage-focused setup—Samurai is highly recommended. “Dual-Wield” is truly powerful, and other jobs equipped with “Dual-Wield” can work well too.
