The Laboratory of Dungeon Antiqua 2

I apologize if some parts feel unnatural, as I am translating from Japanese.

Dungeon Antiqua 2 was released on Steam in January 2025 and was developed by Shiromohu Factory. It is a classic, retro-style RPG.

The game is a sequel to Dungeon Antiqua, featuring more job classes, and the magic system has been changed from a limited-use system to an MP-based system.

Key Points of the Game

These are my impressions after clearing the game.

Party Composition

You can clear the game without much trouble as long as you level up and switch jobs as needed. I cleared it at around level 60 with a party of Samurai, Paladin, Priest, and Mage.

In the latter half of the game, the dungeons become more complex, so you end up fighting more often than expected. At first, I relied on auto-battle, but in the end, a setup with two physical attackers, a Mage using staff attacks, and Pray proved the most stable. It’s easy to play since you can just hold down the button. For boss fights, however, you should issue commands manually. Having two magic users in the party also makes things safer.

The Usefulness of Priest’s Pray

The Priest’s final skill, “Pray,” is very useful. It does fail occasionally, but it restores around 20 MP, so with this skill, you won’t run out of magic.

In this game, you can set automatic recovery after battles, so having a party member dedicated to Pray makes HP management much easier.

Bishop Is Difficult to Use Effectively

This is assuming you are building your party around using Pray, but in that case, Bishop has poor synergy with it. Since you can only equip two command-type skills, Bishop cannot use Pray.

Additionally, Bishop cannot use the top-tier P5 spells, so while the class isn’t weak, it does feel a bit underwhelming. It’s probably best to raise a Bishop at a relaxed pace after clearing the main story.

Death Is a Serious Threat

This has been the case since the original Dungeon Antiqua, but the status ailment “Death” is extremely powerful—one of those unavoidable RPG staples. In the later stages of the game, bosses use it as a matter of course, so preparing countermeasures in advance can dramatically lower the difficulty.

You can prevent Death by using Race Effects that are effective against the enemy you’re fighting, so be sure to take advantage of them.

Helpful Tips

Let’s briefly go over the basics. You can also check the details directly in the game.

The Job Change System

  • When you master a job, you gain a Master Bonus. This bonus carries over even after changing jobs, so by mastering multiple jobs and switching between them, your character will steadily grow stronger.
  • Your level and skills are retained even after changing jobs. This is a change from the previous game.

Combat System

  • Characters in the back row do not take melee attacks, but they also cannot attack unless they are equipped with ranged weapons.
  • If you enter battle by colliding with an enemy symbol from the side or from behind, you can gain a preemptive strike. The same applies to enemies, so be careful. You can prevent side attacks by moving while keeping your facing direction fixed.
  • There are twotypes of treasure chests.
    • Fixed-type chests appear only once.
    • Random-type chests respawn multiple times.
  • Buff spells such as PROTECTION can be stacked up to two levels and have a permanent effect. They can be canceled out by debuff spells like ARMOR BREAK.
  • Race Effects
    • If the target has the corresponding weapon or armor equipped, damage is halved and status ailments are nullified.
    • If a weapon has Race Effects, it deals double damage and applies its additional effect 100% of the time.
  • Dual-wield
    • Attacks are calculated using the right-hand weapon.
    • So even if the right-hand weapon has a Sleep effect, the enemy will wake up if the left-hand weapon is normal.
    • However, attacks always hit while the enemy is asleep, so it’s not a loss.
  • Resistance
    • Even at 100%, status effects can still be inflicted by enemy critical hits.
    • A screen flash indicates a critical hit.

Elements

There are four elements: Fire, Ice, Dark, and Non-elemental. Non-elemental attacks are not affected by weaknesses or resistances.

Additionally, if a spell exploits an enemy’s weakness, damage is multiplied by 4, while hitting an enemy with resistance reduces damage to 1/4.
